Tegenungan Waterfall Near Ubud, Bali

BLOG · Nov 12, 2024

This travel guide will explain how to get there and everything you need to know before you set off!

Tegenungan Waterfall is perhaps the busiest and most famous waterfall on Bali, easily accessible from Ubud or Sanur.

Descending the stairs to the waterfall takes only about 15 minutes, but the return journey can be tough due to the high humidity and uneven stone steps (they feel like they were built for giants!).

The waterfall, about 30 meters high, allows you to swim in the pool below. On sunny days, you might even catch a glimpse of a magnificent rainbow.

You can swim in the pool below the waterfall (if you're careful), and there are some restaurants where you can sit down to eat while enjoying the scenery.

If you're looking for a secret waterfall without crowds, I wouldn't recommend Tegenungan, but it's still worth a visit just to admire the beautiful views!

A Word on Development and Restaurants
Be forewarned – you won't find tranquility here. Tegenungan Waterfall is overly developed, filled with shops, restaurants, and tacky photo props. It's turning into a tourist trap.

Most of the photos of Tegenungan Waterfall in this travel guide were taken before the influx of tourists and new constructions.

I hope someone in Bali can step in and clean up and preserve this place as it deserves; but for now, this is what it is.

On the bright side, it's one of the most accessible waterfalls on Bali, and the scenery is still spectacular!

When to Visit
The best time to visit is early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Tegenungan can be very crowded by midday.

The waterfall is particularly impressive during and after the rainy season, when it transforms into a massive two-tiered fall.

However, if you go during the middle of the rainy season (or after heavy rain), the water may look like brown chocolate.

The ticket prices for Tegenungan Waterfall are still valid as of 2024, but since it has become a popular attraction on Bali, the fees seem to be increasing every year.

How to Get There
Tegenungan Waterfall is located in the Sukawati District on the Indonesian island of Bali.

It sits between Sanur and Ubud, reachable by car in just 20-30 minutes from either location. Visiting Tegenungan Waterfall from other parts of Bali is also fairly easy.

The best way to get there is by renting a motorcycle or hiring a private car and driver.

Private Drivers and Motorcycle Rentals on Bali
If you want to explore Bali comfortably and safely in a private car with an English-speaking driver, my top recommendation is GetYourGuide.

Their starting price is 700,000 Indonesian Rupiahs (about $48 USD) for a full-day (up to 10 hours) drive and sightseeing tour on Bali for 1-5 passengers. This is the total price for the entire car + driver + gas! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable transfers from the airport to your hotel.

If you prefer to ride a motorcycle, they have those too. Their motorcycle rentals start at 140,000 Indonesian Rupiahs (about $9 USD), including a helmet, raincoat, and free delivery service in the southern regions of Bali.
