Iceland's Hengifoss Falls: A Guide to an Astounding Natural Wonder

BLOG · Nov 09, 2024

Despite the fierce competition among Hengifoss, Dynjandi, and Haifoss falls, Hengifoss undoubtedly stands out as one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in all of Iceland.

This sight seems like it's from Mars. Large strips of red clay are sandwiched between the rock layers, creating a bizarre and unbelievable appearance.

This travel guide will explain how to get there and provide all the information you need to know before embarking on your journey!

Hiking to Hengifoss Falls

I almost missed out on the hike to Hengifoss because it was a cloudy day, and I wasn't sure if the waterfall was worth seeing. But I'm glad I decided to go!

The hike to Hengifoss takes approximately one hour, and the scenery along the way is breathtaking. The trail isn't difficult, but there's a noticeable elevation gain of about 300 meters (980 feet).

Along the way, you'll cross several streams and sheep fences, but each one has a bridge, so the terrain is fairly manageable.

The photo above was taken with a drone, but you can easily capture some fantastic photos of the waterfall from the ground as well.

Hengifoss is the second-highest waterfall in Iceland, standing at a height of 130 meters (420 feet)!

Boulders and Streams at Hengifoss Falls in Iceland

The boulders and streams surrounding Hengifoss Falls create a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. The powerful waterfall cascades down the rocky cliff, creating a mist that adds to the mystical atmosphere. The surrounding area is filled with lush greenery and unique geological formations, making it a perfect spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Litlanesfoss Falls

Litlanesfoss is a beautiful two-tiered waterfall that you'll pass on your way to Hengifoss, roughly one kilometer into the hike. Like Svartifoss in Skaftafell, this waterfall is surrounded by striking basalt columns.

Litlanesfoss, which is 30 meters high, may not be the largest waterfall in Iceland, but it stands out for its uniqueness. And if you're already hiking to Hengifoss, it's a free added bonus. A short hike allows you to appreciate two stunning waterfalls!

How to Get to Hengifoss Falls

Hengifoss Falls is located in the east of Iceland, approximately 700 kilometers (430 miles) from Reykjavik. To get there, start from Eyjafjallajökull and follow the Ring Road (Route 1) towards Fellabær.

You don't need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to visit Hengifoss; any two-wheel-drive car can reach the parking lot, from where it's a one-hour walk to the waterfall. You can follow the walking route on Google Maps from the parking lot to the waterfall.

Starting from 2024, there is no parking fee or entrance fee for hiking to the waterfall.
