Here are 11 helpful tips for your first visit to Mount Rushmore:

  1. Morning Serenity: The best time to visit Mount Rushmore is in the morning. At this hour, the number of tourists is low, the temperature is moderate (especially during summer), and the lighting is perfect for photography. We arrived at 8 am and enjoyed a nearly uninterrupted walk, capturing pictures of the scenic spot without any people. By 10 am, the monument had become very crowded.

  2. Unique Entry Fee: Although Mount Rushmore is managed by the National Park Service, its operating model is somewhat different. There is no entrance fee, but a parking fee is charged. Notably, the America the Beautiful annual or lifetime passes do not cover the parking fee, which may surprise some visitors.

  3. Nighttime Splendor: As night falls, the sculptures on Mount Rushmore are illuminated, presenting a unique nightscape for visitors. During summer, there are also lighting ceremonies where rangers narrate stories about U.S. presidents and American history. You can check the seasonal opening hours on the NPS website.

  4. Engineering Marvel: The sculptures at Mount Rushmore are a tremendous engineering marvel. Each head is as tall as a six-story building, with a nose about 20 feet high and eyes nearly 10 feet wide. From 1927 to 1941, this granite monument took 14 years and nearly 400 workers to carve. Despite the harsh and dangerous working conditions, they successfully completed the project without any fatalities.

  5. Historical Stories Behind: Mount Rushmore was built to commemorate four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. They represent the birth of the nation, territorial expansion, the preservation of the Union during the Civil War, and the development of the United States as a world power in the 20th century.

  6. Convenient Transportation: Mount Rushmore is just a 30-minute drive from Rapid City, South Dakota, which offers numerous hotels and a regional airport. Since most visitors choose to drive, there are plenty of parking spaces around the monument. Although there is no public transportation directly to Mount Rushmore, some tour companies can provide guide services, including transportation, navigation, and itinerary planning.

  8. Ranger Company: Rangers are available throughout the day at the monument to provide guided tours without the need for a reservation.

  9. Hiking Fun: At Mount Rushmore, you can embark on a short hike along the President's Trail. This half-mile loop starts and ends at the main viewing platform and takes about 20 to 40 minutes to complete.
